Will a Skip Damage My Driveway? (4 Ways to Protect Your Property)
It’s a fair question. You’ve spent thousands of pounds on a new block-paving driveway or a smooth tarmac finish, and now you’re about to have a heavy steel box—which could weigh up to 8 tonnes when full—dropped onto it by a heavy-duty HGV.
At CB Skip Hire, we don’t want to leave a permanent souvenir of our visit on your property. Here is the honest truth about driveway damage and how we work together to prevent it.
The Risks: Scratches, Cracks, and Sinking
There are three main ways a skip can affect your driveway:
- Pressure Points: The metal “feet” or the underside of the skip can scrape the surface during delivery or collection.
- Stabilizer Legs: To lift a heavy skip, the truck extends “stabilizer legs.” These exert immense pressure on a small area to keep the truck level.
- Weight Sinking: If your driveway was laid on a soft sub-base (common with older drives), the sheer weight of a full skip can cause the ground to dip or “bowl.”
How We Prevent Damage
We train our drivers to be surgical with their deliveries, but physics is physics. Here is how you can bulletproof your driveway:
- The “Plywood Trick”: This is the single most effective method. Placing two or three sturdy scaffold boards or a sheet of thick plywood where the skip will sit distributes the weight across a larger surface area.
- Check Your Manholes: Never ask a driver to place a skip over a manhole cover or a drain. Even a “heavy-duty” cover isn’t designed to support a 6-yard skip full of wet soil.
- Mind the Overhang: Remember that the truck needs space to extend its arms. If you have low-hanging tree branches or expensive guttering nearby, let us know so we can plan the “drop” safely.
Our Promise to You
If we arrive and believe your driveway is at high risk of significant damage (for example, if the tarmac is very thin or the ground is waterlogged), our driver will speak to you before dropping the skip. We’d rather lose a booking than ruin your driveway.
